The city is buzzing outside the window, the life rapidly flows its mainstream of the stone streets, whereas we are sitting in a small cozy café. Nikolay continues the story about his steps on the thorny way to success: about work with Slava Zaytsev after graduation from the “Fashion Laboratory”, career in “Mercury” and, of course, about foundation of his brand.

Part I.

Dear followers and readers, I am glad to introduce you my new interview given to me by a Russian newcomer designer Nikolay Krasnikov. This is a brand new but already vivid star in the constellation of the Russian fashion-industry’s masters. The winner and the runner-up of many prestigious competitions, the apprentice of Slava Zaytsev’s “Fashion Laboratory”, he worked later as Zaytsev’s personal assistant. Now he is the senior brand-designer responsible for Dolce&Gabbana boutiques in Moscow. During the last Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia Nikolay has presented the third collection bearing the name of his own brand. Less than in a month after the show actress Daria Ekamasova, famous for her part in the movie “Once upon a time there lived some peasant woman”, stole admiring glances wearing Krasnikov’s dresses on the red carpet of the International Rome Film Festival.

Speaking about Nikolay, Beethoven’s words unwittingly emerge in my mind: “The barriers are not erected which can say to aspiring talents and industry, 'Thus far and no farther”. Indeed, he has literally conquered “the temple of fashion”, and this is what seems to be impossible to do for the rest of the people. Krasnikov makes a figure not only with his talent but also with a sense of purpose. Meanwhile, despite being successful and famous, this is not a jumped-up person, on contrary, Nikolay possesses a very outgoing and open personality.

Дорогой читатель, сегодня я хочу представить Вашему вниманию моё интервью с молодым российским дизайнером Николаем Красниковым. Это – новая, но очень яркая звезда в плеяде мастеров российской фешн-индустрии. Победитель и призёр многих престижных конкурсов, ученик «Лаборатории моды» Зайцева, позднее работавший личным ассистентом Вячеслава Михайловича, а ныне брэнд-дизайнер бутиков Dolce&Gabbana в Москве, представивший вот уже третью коллекцию под собственным брендом в рамках Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia. Не прошло и месяца с момента последнего показа, как на красной дорожке Римского Кинофестиваля актриса Дарья Екамасова, известная по фильму «Жила-была одна баба», вызывала восхищение зрителей в платьях, созданных Николаем Красниковым.

Рассказывая про Николая, невольно вспоминаю слова Бетховена: «Для человека с талантом и любовью к труду не существует преград». Да, он буквально покорил модный Олимп, сделал то, что многим кажется невозможным. Николай вызывает восхищение не только своим талантом, но и целеустремлённостью. И в то же время, несмотря на успех и славу, это не зазнавшийся, а очень открытый и приятный в общении человек.

The capabilities of human fantasy can at times stun with their boundlessness. Material incarnations of images born by Nikolay Krasnikov’s fantasy are not solely his vision of a historic period; it is a collision of two epochs and their natural entwinement.

In his spring-summer collection, which has been presented recently to the brand’s admirers, Nikolay Krasnikov has encrypted a hidden message about the legendary historical personality of Zoe Paleologue. The collection dedicated to the epoch of the early Renaissance bears the name of this great woman – “Princess Zoe”.


В своей весенне-летней коллекции, на днях представленной вниманию поклонников бренда, Николай Красников зашифровал послание о легендарной исторической личности Софии Палеолог. Коллекция, посвящённая эпохе Раннего Возрождения, носит имя этой выдающейся женщины – «Княгиня Зоя».

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia Day 1: Basharatyan V "Siberia"

Spring-Summer 2013 collection was inspired by Siberia in the shape of one of its most unusual and unfamiliar ecosystems - the Chara Sands.

Nikolay Krasnikov: FW2012 Highlights and upcoming fashion show

During the last Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia my attention was particularly attracted by Nikolay Krasnikov’s collection. Nikolay Krasnikov used to be Vyacheslav Zaycev’s student and has worked as a designer assistant for him. Today Krasnikov creates designs for his own fashion brand, founded in 2010.

So what is so exceptional about his collections? Nikolay Krasnikov seeks inspiration in either culture or history which is in one way or other related to Russia’s past. Besides a great deal in creating the fashions lies on improvisation, fascinating skill of binding the ambience of the Past with contemporaneity. The heroine of the collections is feminine, romantic but at the same time very strong, possessing a vivid personality.

Особое моё внимание на прошлой неделе моды Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia привлекла коллекция Николая Красникова, в прошлом – ученика и ассистента Вячеслава Зайцева, а ныне модельера собственного бренда, основанного в 2010 году.

Чем же интересно и необычно его творчество? Вдохновение Николай Красников черпает в искусстве и культуре, так или иначе связанных с Россией и её прошлым. При этом в создании моделей большую роль играет и импровизация, удивительное умение органично связать дух прошлого с современностью. Героиня коллекций женственна, романтична, но в то же время сильна и ярка.

“The fall-winter collection has become a sentimental dedication to a Russian ballet-dancer, Mathilde Kschessinska, who has made history not only as Prima ballerina of the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre of St. Petersburg and bohemian Paris, but also as “femme fatale” who has charmed an emperor and two grand princes. Kschessinska was the richest fine lady in pre-revolutionary Russia, she would scatter fortunes on her outfits. She was the one to possess extinguishing glamour, chic, undeniable femininity and irresistible allure. Society’s overwhelming attention was Kschessinska’s eternal and faithful companion whereas her contribution to Russian arts is priceless. However, the collection is not utopian nostalgia, the designer has created an image of nowaday Mathilde. She is an extravagant, uncompromisingly seductive, defiantly bright modern socialite, who is always outstanding and discussed, a trendsetter rejecting old fashions. Such woman is utterly unpredictable when it comes to her tastes: todays she’ll put on a vaporous lace dress while tomorrow she’ll demand for a hoop skirt and a bra top… The palette underlying this collection reigned in Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes and was created by Leon Bakst, the legendary artist. Apart from woolen, silk and lace textures, Russian craftsmen’s made hand embroidery is also emphasized, as it imparts an air of the epoch and theatre. So are furs and exotic leathers. Feminine silhouettes, a plenty of details, precious fabrics, shining jewelry – it is all about the Fall-Winter 2012-2013 Nikolay Krasnikov Collection”.

«Осенне-зимняя работа Красникова стала сентиментальным посвящением русской балерине Матильде Кшесинской, вошедшей в историю не только в качестве примы Мариинского театра и богемного Парижа, но и роковой женщины, влюбившей в себя императора и двух великих князей. Кшесинская была самой богатой светской дамой в дореволюционной России и не скупилась на наряды, она обладала затмевающим всех блеском, шиком, несомненной женственностью и непреодолимым обаянием. Непомерное внимание окружающих всегда сопровождало Кшесинскую, а ее роль в русском искусстве просто неоценима. Но все-таки дизайнер не стал утопически ностальгировать и поэтому нарисовал образ Матильды наших дней: экстравагантной, бескомпромиссно соблазнительной, вызывающе яркой, современной светской львицы, которая всегда заметна и обсуждаема, она предпочитает задавать новые тренды, а не следовать старым. Такая женщина совсем непредсказуема в своих предпочтениях: сегодня надевает ажурное летящее платье, а на завтра заказывает пышную юбку с кринолином и топом-бра…. В основу цветов коллекции легла палитра, царившая на сценах дягилевских сезонов и созданная легендарным художником Бакстом.  Помимо шерстяных, шелковых и кружевных текстур выделяются ручные вышивки русских мастеров, передавая дух эпохи и театра, натуральные меха и экзотические виды кожи. Женственные силуэты, обилие деталей, благородные материалы, блеск драгоценностей - вот она, коллекция NIKOLAY KRASNIKOV осень-зима 2012-2013».

Spring-Summer 2013 collection, which is going to be shown during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia in only 10 days, is dedicated to a legendary woman, the Grand Duchess of Moscow and Byzantine Paleologue imperial dynasty descendant Zoe Palaiologina.

Весенне-летняя коллекция 2013 года, показ которой состоится в рамках Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia уже всего через 10 дней, посвящена легендарной женщине, великой княжне Московской и потомку византийской императорской династии Палеологов, Софии Палеолог.

“In spite that autumn has just begun, fashion designer Nikolay Krasnikov is ready to show his new Spring-Summer 2013 collection during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia. This event will take place on October 22nd at 5 o’clock pm at Moscow Manege (Moscow, Manezhnaja square, 1).

The Spring-Summer 2013 Nikolay Krasnikov collection was inspired by a generalized character of European women living in the end of XV-the beginning of XVI century – in the age of the Early Renaissance. But the main character of the collection remains one personality, one woman, who laid a foundation of the new history of our state. According to modern concepts this woman would be considered a cosmopolitan: majestic and going into decline Byzantium, powerful and guileful Rome, patriarchal and  renascent Moscow are far not the only stages of her life. Princess Zoe she was entitled in the West, tsarina Sophia was her name in Russia."

No place like home

A person is genetically bound to the place of his origin. Every peace, every corner feels special, it’s filled with reminiscences. And a personality reflects the unicity of the birthplace, as its formation is strongly influenced by environment.

Человек генетически связан с местом своего рождения. Каждая его часть, каждый уголок ощущается по-особенному, оно заполнено воспоминаниями. Личность человека отражает уникальность места, где он появился на свет, ведь окружение влияет на её становление.

I’ve always felt special for the Old Town of Vilnius: the way it’s buried in verdure, it’s sophistication and subtility. I feel its gestures. Oh yes, it’s a living creature with its own character so different, with the amazing richness of patterns, shapes. I love experiencing the tranquility of being lost in those narrow streets piercing the heart of it, revealing and exploring the most secluded corners with their unique atmosphere. Standing on the Three Crosses hill, watch the whole city kissed by beams of sunshine peering out through dense clouds spread before your eyes. At night – vivid lights in shop windows, bars, clubs and the tender light of street lanterns.

Для меня особенным всегда был Старый Город Вильнюса: то, как он утопает в зелени, его изысканность и утончённость. Я ощущаю каждый его жест. Да, это живое существо со своим собственным характером, всегда таким разным, с удивительной многоликостью. Умиротворяющее чувство – затеряться на узких улочках, пронизывающих его сердце, открывая и изучая самые укромные уголки с их неповторимой атмосферой. Или, стоя на горе Трёх Крестов, любоваться залитым пробивающимимися через густые облака лучами солнца городом, который стелется передо мной, как на ладони. А ночью – яркие огни витрин магазинов, баров, клубов и нежный льющийся свет уличных фонарей.

Sensate the freshness of the air after the rain, which fills the breast and is twisted with the smell of history of each building, of each block stone of pavements. Wet flowers decorating Vokiečių street, hammered interior details of the little cozy cafes in Pilies. The paintings market in Didžioji, amber shops. The fountain near the Town Hall. The unbelievable mix of architecture. And, of course, of religion: the domes of orthodox churches loom amid the roofs of catholic cathedrals. 

Ощущать свежесть воздуха после дождя, которая заполняет всю грудь, сплетается с запахом  истории каждого здания, каждого камня брусчатки. Влажные лепестки цветов, украшающих Vokiečių, кованые детали уютных маленьких кафешек на Pilies. Картинный базарчик на Didžioji, магазинчики янтаря. Фонтан на Ратушной. Невероятная смесь архитектуры. И, несомненно, религии, когда купола церквей маячат среди крыш костёлов.
